Oct 20,2023 | MONDAWE

We All Love Aluminum Pergola

People would use perloga in their garden, just for those comfortable and cool walkways and sitting areas. Traditional wooden pergolas are high maintenance, which, however, require yearly paint. Aluminum pergolas are one of the modern low maintenance alternative to wooden one and gradually become a popular choice for backyard upgrades.

Alumium Pergolas provide shady and stylish areas for our garden. But they also need proper care for longer service life. This blog would guide you how to mantain aluminum pergolas step by step, and give you some tips to prevent aluminum pergola from weathering, dirt buildup, and discoloration.

What do We Need For Cleaning Aluminum Pergola?

Before getting started, gather the appropriate supplies. Don't worry, nothing complicated or harsh.

1. Mild Detergent

Choose a gentle detergent, like dish soap or car wash. Avoid abrasive cleaners or anything too acidic or alkaline which could react with the aluminum. A mild solution is all you need to lift dirt and debris.

2. Soft-Bristle Scrub Brush

Look for a scrub brush with synthetic bristles rated soft or extra soft. Stiff bristled brushes can scratch or scuff aluminum surfaces.

3. Garden Hose

An exterior hose allows you to thoroughly rinse away detergent and grime from all angles. Adjust the nozzle to a gentle setting.

4. Pressure Washer (Optional)

For stubborn buildup, a pressure washer can blast away dirt a hose may miss. Use the lowest pressure setting and keep the nozzle at least a foot from the pergola.

Now, Let's do this step by step!

With the right supplies in hand, you’re ready to wash your pergola. Follow these steps for best results:

Step 1. Sweep Away Loose Debris

Use a broom to sweep off any loose pollen, leaves, soil or other debris sitting on top of the pergola. This prevents you from scrubbing in grime during washing.

Step 2. Mix Detergent and Water

Fill a bucket with warm water and add a small amount of your mild detergent. Too much soap can leave a film, so start with just a spoonful mixed well into the bucket.

Step 3. Scrub the Entire Pergola

Use your soft brush soaked in the detergent solution to gently scrub the pergola from top to bottom. Get into crevices and details. Rinse the brush often as you work.

Step 4. Rinse Thoroughly

After scrubbing, use your garden hose to rinse away all traces of soap residue. Rinsing prevents streaks or water spots as the pergola dries.

Step 5. Use Pressure Washer for Stubborn Grime (Optional)

For areas with ground-in dirt that didn’t budge with scrubbing, use a pressure washer for an extra cleaning boost. Keep pressure low and test a small area first.

Step 6. Allow to Fully Dry

Once thoroughly rinsed, let the pergola completely air dry before using again. Drying out prevents any moisture buildup that leads to discoloration.

Recommended Cleaning Schedule

To keep your pergola looking its best, make washing it part of your regular outdoor maintenance routine.

1. Monthly Light Cleaning

Choosing a high-quality aluminum pergola can make routine maintenance much easier. Simply wipe it down monthly with a soft cloth and warm, soapy water to prevent dirt buildup. Avoid using abrasive cleaners.

2. Deep Clean Twice Per Year

Do a full scrub and rinse of the entire pergola at least twice a year. Spring and fall are ideal for heavy duty cleansing.

How to Avoid Damages When Cleaning?

Harsh chemicals and abrasives can damage aluminum pergolas. Keep these precautions in mind:

1. Use Only Non-Abrasive Cleaners

Any cleaner too gritty or acidic strips away the pergola's protective finish. Stick to mild, non-abrasive formulas.

2. No Harsh Scrubbing

Scrub gently to avoid scratching the aluminum. Let soapy water do the work, not your muscle.

3. Completely Dry After Cleaning

Allow ample time for your pergola to fully air dry before using. Trapped water leads to corrosion and pits.
